Vintage Remedies Saturdays

I recently posted about our purchase of Vintage Remedies for Tweens. Each Friday we hope to do a chapter of the book and I will post about what we did. Yesterday was our first chapter in the book. Chapter one is titled Real Foods. I had Grace read the chapter on her own then we chose from four recipes to cook or bake. The chapter consisted of teaching her the differences between modern food and real food. What type of ingredients you would expect in modern convenience foods and why it is unhealthy to eat them. We choose to bake Strawberry Fruit Bars because I needed something sweet and healthy in the house to snack on. Luckily I had most of the ingredients on hand which made it even more appealing, nothing to go out and purchase. The healthy ingredients included whole wheat flour, rolled oats, chopped almonds, flaxseed meal, eggs, butter, and strawberry preserves. We also cooked this in our new toaster oven (loving the new purchase). As you can see from the photo I didn't have time to take a pic before a few pieces were eaten. It doesn't look like much, but is very tasty.

Preview for next week: Chapter two is kitchen basics with projects such as making cheese, baking bread, home made jam and yogurt. This will probably be broken down over a couple of weeks.
