Do you every wonder where the word you speak comes from? If so, this book is for you. From the very first paragraph of King Alfred's English I was caught hook, line, and sinker. There is so much information in this one book I am sure to go back and read it a second time. King Alfred's English not only includes information about where the English language came from, but also interweaves historical figures, geography, church history, poetry, languages, and so much more. I love the author's analogy of the vocabulary being a deck of cards and grammar is the rules you learn to play the game. The text is written in a very conversational tone that makes it an easy read. My favorite parts were learning word origins and church history. Throughout the book is the struggles to print the Bible for common man to read. For the purposes of this review I chose to read the book and share interesting facts with my family. I do though plan on including the book in our English curriculum for high school. King Alfred's English is recommended for ages 12-adult. The softcover book sales for $16.95 and kindle edition for $5.59. Many homeschool book distributors also carry the book. Student and teacher pages on the website are free, including worksheets and tests. For more information visit The Shorter Word.
