Over the past year I have really tried to decrease the amount of electricity we have used as a family. Which has been very hard due to very cold temps in the South this past Winter and extremely hot temps this Summer. So when Fall came about three weeks ago I turned the AC/Heat off and it hasn't come back on. Believe or not this Friday night it will go down to 39 which means very cold the next morning in the house. We have two wood stoves that we will utilize for heat this year. I have already had to use it a couple of mornings to take the chill out of the house. I have also decided to go back to line drying most of the clothing and linens until it just gets to cold to do it. We usually was about 6 loads a week if I am also doing bedding. The new challenge I have put upon myself is not using the dishwasher. It is hard to tell how much money will actually be saved here because we have a well and need electricity to pump water into the house. So electricity is being used whether we use the dishwasher or the run water to rinse and fill the sink. We did over the summer gradually push the thermostat up to 80 and keep it there except for some nights while sleeping. This plus the early drop in temps did help drop the electric bill by 40.00. But I am looking for much more of a decrease. I will keep you posted as to what works and what doesn't work.
For those that haven't entered yet there are a couple of more days to enter the Life of Fred giveaway. I am sure that Grace is looking forward to pulling the winning name.

Actually, Diane, using the dishwasher is the most efficient way to wash dishes, whether you are trying to save water or electricity. Maybe you could just change the setting on the dishwasher to not do the Dry cycle at the end?
I hate to see someone willingly pass up a dishwasher! But, good luck either way!
